Presidency in Washington, D.C. (1861-1865)

“The Presidency in Washington cent displays the US Capitol building’s dome under construction, as it was during Lincoln’s term in office. The dome continued to rise as the Civil War raged and the Union struggled to remain united.

The war began just after Lincoln took office in 1861. During his second year as president, Lincoln declared all slaves free in the rebel territory through the Emancipation Proclamation.

Furthermore, Lincoln was elected for a second term of presidency in 1864.  The war ended a year later.  It was only five days after the end of the war, that President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated during his attendance at a play in Washington.

Army doctors worked all night to save him, but he died the next morning at the age of 56.  He was buried in Springfield, Illinois, after his body lay in state and was visited by thousands of mourners underneath the Capitol’s newly-completed dome.”- usmint.gov.

Additionally, the reverse (tails) included four different designs from important phases of Lincoln’s life, from his birth all the way to when he was president. Furthermore, “a lamination error occurs when metal flakes off the surface of a coin or planchet.  It’s generally accepted that the flaking, peeling, and cracking is due to impurities in the alloy, which causes metal to separate.” – Error-Ref.com

How Lamination Peel Errors Happen

Moreover, “during the preparation of the planchet strip, foreign materials such as grease, dirt, oil, slag or gas, may become trapped just below the surface of the metal.  Coins struck from this strip later begin to flake and peel, since adhesion is poor in the location of the trapped material.”  – coinworld.com
