Curved Clip Error Coin

Curved Clip Mint Error Coin: 1978-D Penny

A curved clip mint error coin is a type of numismatic error that occurs during the production of coins. In other words, a 1978-D penny curved clip mint error refers to a portion of the coin’s circumference being absent. This is due to a misalignment during the blanking or cutting process.

1978 penny error

Furthermore, the blanking process involves cutting round metal discs, called planchets from large sheets of metal. Occasionally, the cutting machine may malfunction or experience misalignment. This results in irregularly shaped planchets.  Moreover, the irregularly shaped planchet used to strike a coin, creates a clipped mint error.

Note the Crescent-shaped Indention

Essentially, a curved clip mint error is named because a missing portion of the planchet creates a curved or crescent-shaped indentation. The location and size of the curved clip can vary, but typically affects a small segment of the coin’s circumference.

Curved Clip Mint Error Coin Value

The value of a curved clip error coin may vary.  Moreover, it depends on several factors, such as the severity of the clip, the rarity of the coin, and the demand among collectors.  Additionally, the more pronounced and larger the curved clip, the more desirable the error coin becomes.

To determine the specific worth of a curved clip mint error coin, have it authenticated and appraised by a professional coin grading service or a reputable numismatist.  For a small fee, they’ll assess the coin’s condition, rarity, and market demand to provide a valuation estimate.

Note the Blakesley Effect

The Blakesley Effect refers to a specific type of error that can occur during the minting process of coins. It’s named after a man named Blakesley, who first described this phenomenon.

mint error coins to look for

The Blakesley Effect specifically refers to the raised rim formed along the clipped edge of a coin.  A coin struck with insufficient force or misalignment, displaces the metal pushing it upward.  This causes the formation of a ridge or rim along the clipped area and a flattened area opposite the clip.

Coin collectors find these errors intriguing due to their unique appearance and the circumstances during minting process.  List your own mint error discoveries on Ebay by observing how others have listed theirs.

Gas Bubbles or Plating Blister Pennies

Furthermore, plating blisters, or gas bubbles, are common occurrences on 1983 pennies.  In other words, they’re “particles caught in between the copper plating and the zinc core of an improperly washed zinc planchets react.

Moreover, it causes both the copper plating to bubble up and the zinc core to corrode. While it is technically an error made during the coin production process, it’s not considered as valuable.” – coinworld.com

However, people still collect pennies with plating issues, including those with plating gas bubbles, but average asking price is a dollar or less.  Additionally, “a common cause of zinc rot is the presence of a small perforation or tear in the copper plating.  This allows oxygen and reactive compounds to reach the zinc core.  If the bubbles pop, the coin develops zinc rot.”   – error-ref.com

1909 Lincoln Cent Errors, Varieties, and Values

1909 Lincoln Cent Errors, Varieties, and Values

The 1909 Lincoln cent is a sought after wheat penny known for errors and varieties.  Moreover, the values of the 1909 penny vary, but they can be as high as the price of a small house.  Furthermore, both mints struck coins with the initials and without the initials.” – Heritage Auctions

1909 Penny Famous for Controversy

Additionally, “the 1909 S version was the first year of the Lincoln coin. Almost immediately upon release the public made complaints about Brenner’s initials (V.D.B.) on the back of the Lincoln cent, because the initials are located under the wheat stalks.”

1909 penny value 1909 lincoln wheat cent

After the location of the V.D.B. initials attracted public scrutiny, the U.S. Mint responded to the criticism by removing the initials entirely.  “Thus the result some 1909 Lincoln cents bear the V.D.B. initials, and others do not.” – the-sun.com

Collectible 1909 Penny Varieties

Additionally, “instead of placing the initials elsewhere with new dies, mint employees simply removed them entirely from die.  This produced a new variety of 1909 cents without the V.D.B.

Furthermore, as new dies were being prepared, the designer’s initials on the old dies were removed by crude tooling. 1909 pennies struck by these altered dies are highly sought-after.” – error-ref.com

1909 V.D.B. Struck Through Reverse Error

What caused this coin to catch my eye first, is that the V.D.B. initials appear as a struck through grease error.  Moreover, I wouldn’t have noticed the V.D.B. without a microscope, because the initials aren’t as visible to the naked eye.

Was this 1909 V.D.B. penny deliberately struck through from crude tools used to remove the initials?  Was it an unintentional error?  Additionally, feel free to contact me with your thoughts about it.

1909 Lincoln Cent Mintages

The 1909 cent is extremely valuable not only because of the fame garnered from the controversy surrounding them, but also the low mintage brought on by the controversy.  Furthermore, only 484,000 1909-S pennies were produced.  However, though that’s a rare variety, it’s not all that makes these Lincoln pennies so valuable.
