1999 Delaware State Quarter “Spitting Horse” Coin

1999 Delaware Quarter "Spitting Horse" Varieties & Values

The 1999 P Delaware state quarter famously displays the “Spitting Horse” Die Variety.  Moreover, it got the name for the die crack at the horse’s mouth.  Quarters like this sold for $35.00 or more in raw condition on Ebay

Furthermore, ANACS and NGC are two inexpensive options for those on a budget that want to have the variety graded and slabbed. The condition of the coins, and the prominence of errors or anomalies on them contributes to their value.

Moreover, the coin with the lowest population of the highest grade gets the greater value.  In other words, that’s why it’s recommended to buy original wrapped rolls to search. 1999 P and 1999 D Delaware state quarters also display doubled dies!

2018 Michigan Quarter Errors

2018 Michigan Quarter Errors, Varieties, & Values

2018 Michigan quarter errors and varieties exist!  For instance, this 2018 Michigan quarter displays an improperly annealed planchet error.  Furthermore, I almost mistook it for an environmentally damaged coin.

pictured rocks error quarters

I learned otherwise after scouring the web for articles and visual examples and sought out advice for how to appropriately identify the error.  Moreover, to understand a mint error like this, it’s important to understand how the coin production process works.

The Annealing Process

“Coins start out as blanks.  First, blanks are first cut from metal coils and then sent to an annealing furnace.  Then, from the furnace they go to a cooling water bath, followed by a polishing/brightening rinse.  Finally, drying machines help shine and burnish each piece.” – coinweek.com

The annealing process softens the metal to prepare it for striking.  Blank planchets are placed in an annealing furnace that first heats, and then slowly cools the metal.” – numismatics.

How to tell Environmental Damage from an Annealing Error

“To tell the difference between an annealing error, (which happens before striking,) and environmental damage, (which happens after striking), pay attention to the luster of the coin.

error quarters list 2018

Furthermore, the sheen on an uncirculated coin with an annealing error remains visible, whereas corrosion disfigures or destroys luster.” – ngccoin.com

Improperly Annealed Quarter Error

“The copper core (reeding) shows a nice normal red copper color.  Furthermore, the planchet displays as darker coloring remaining on the smooth edge of the reeding after the planchet is struck in the collar.

2018-p michigan quarter error

However, when a coin is ejected from the collar, the darker coloring is removed from the ridged reeding.  The reeding as a normal red copper color is one of the key identifiers to know,” it’s legit.– Fred Weinberg – cointalk.com

Furthermore, the colors most associated with improperly annealed planchet errors are “copper, red, black, brown, and gray.  Coverage can be complete or incomplete.” – error-ref.com

Improperly Annealed Planchet Error Values

Improperly annealed planchet error values depends on a few factors.  They’ve sold between $5 and $20 in raw condition on Ebay.  This type of mint error can have asking prices higher than a hundred dollars, if it’s been properly authenticated.

A 2003 P Illinois State Quarter improperly annealed sintered planchet error, sold at auction via Great Collections for nearly $20.  A 2002 P Mississippi State Quarter Improperly Annealed Sintered Planchet, sold at auction via Great Collections for just $16.00.

pictured rocks quarter errors

The return of investment doesn’t appear worth sending a quarter with an annealing error in for grading.  Demand isn’t high for this type of error, so if you find one you’ll profit more by selling it in raw condition.

2018 Michigan Pictured Rocks Quarter Error

Examine pocket change carefully!  This camouflage colored 2018 P Michigan Pictured Rocks quarter with an improperly annealed planchet appears to be a dirty coin, but rather is actually a rare mint error.

The copper reeding on the coin wouldn’t be its natural color, and the quarter would be lacking its luster if it was just a normal dirty coin.  In other words, you have to look beyond the camouflage!

Selling Error Coins Online

For instance, this 2005 Kansas quarter struck-through grease error is clearly visible without a microscope.  Furthermore, “In God We Rust” errors are still in circulation.  Additionally, sold listings on Ebay indicate they’re worth more than face value.  Moreover, I found this quarter searching through a box of quarters I obtained from a local bank.

“In God We Rust” Struck-through Error Coin

According to The Spruce Crafts, “Like all mechanical machines, a lubricant is needed in the coin press to prevent the metal parts from causing friction to each other.   In the event of this coin’s strike, some lubricating grease had escaped from the machinery onto the surface of the coin die.

in god we rust quarter

As a result, the grease plugged up the letter T in TRUST.  In other words, the T failed to transfer from the die to the coin. This type of error coin is called a struck through grease filled die (or just “filled die”) error.”

Kansas State Quarter

“The fourth quarter released in 2005 honors the 34th state: Kansas. Moreover, the state, which joined the Union on January 29, 1861, takes its name from Native Americans called “Kansa,” meaning “people of the south wind.”

Furthermore, this 2005 state quarter features a buffalo and a sunflower, two of the state’s most beloved symbols.  Buffaloes and sunflowers both were a staple throughout Kansas in the mid-1800s.

2005 Kansas Quarter Design

“The state animal of Kansas, the buffalo — actually, the American bison — used to roam throughout North America.  There is likely no other animal as closely linked to the American West in the minds of people all over the world.  This quarter was the second circulating coin of 2005 to carry an image of the buffalo, with the first being a nickel.”

“The sunflower is the state flower of Kansas, hence its nickname, “the Sunflower State.” Sunflowers are among the largest annual flowers around, although they also come in smaller forms. Their seeds nourish several kinds of wildlife as well as people.” – usmint.gov.

Kansas Quarter Value

Moreover, 2005 Kansas quarters don’t necessarily have to have errors or be a variety in order to be valuable.  For instance, a 2005 P Kansas quarter graded MS68, is valued at $3,150.00.   Additionally, a 2005 D Kansas quarter graded MS68, sold for $288.00.   Essentially all quarters in flawless condition are very valuable.
