1983 Lincoln Cent Errors, Varieties, & Values

1983 Lincoln Cent Die Clash Error and More Errors, Varieties, and Values

1983 Lincoln cent errors and varieties exist and are worth more than their face value. For instance, 1983 penny clashed die error pennies have asking prices starting around $5 and up in raw condition on Ebay.

Additionally , a 1983 one cent coin in raw condition refers to an ungraded or unencapsulated coin.  Moreover, values vary and depend on the eye appeal of the coin, not necessarily the holder.  However, the holder makes it possible to cosign with  auction companies.

Furthermore,  note the die markings on a 1983 Lincoln cent displays a die clash error, rim cuds, and a reverse die crack.   Moreover, these 1983 pennies were found in an original wrapped bank roll purchased from lincolncent.com.

1983 Penny Value

Furthermore, cent coins don’t require being of any varieties or have any errors in order to be more valuable.  In other words, a Lincoln penny in pristine condition is worth much more than one cent.  For instance, a 1983 Lincoln Memorial Cent graded MS68, sold for $1840.00.

Additionally, only two 1983 Lincoln cents in population are graded MS68+.  Furthermore, they’re valued at $5000.00 each.  A 1983 D Lincoln Cent graded MS68, sold for $1380.00.   These are the pennies worth money!

1983 Doubled Die Variety Penny Values

A 1983 variety penny with the highest grade instantly makes it very valuable. For instance, an uncirculated 1983 1C Doubled Die Reverse Lincoln cent graded MS68RD, sold for $7050.00.  Being a variety coin implies a lower population, and in pristine condition it’s even rarer.

Moreover, eye appeal increases value.  For instance, a 1983 1C Doubled Die Reverse Lincoln Cent graded MS64BN, sold for $495.00.  Note the doubling spotted easily with the naked eye.  At first the letters look blurry from a distance, like blurred vision, but it’s actually doubling of the coin.

However, the doubling is more evident when looked at with a 10X loupe or placed under a USB coin microscope. Graded specimens have asking prices of hundreds of dollars on Ebay. Furthermore, A 1983 Lincoln Cent Doubled Die Obverse graded MS65RD, sold for $440.00.

How to Find Rare 1983 Pennies

The best ways to find a rare and valuable penny worth money is to invest in uncirculated original wrapped pennies by the rolls, and search through them.   They’re found in bank rolls and pocket change just as well.

Another option is to purchase 1983 mint sets and then examine all the coins in it.  Don’t break it out of the original mint set unless you think it’s absolutely worth doing so.

Chuck Daughtrey Hosts Coppercoins Auctions

I myself obtained these specimens by bidding on and then examining a single full roll of 1983 Lincoln Cents, obtained by participating in Coppercoins Auctions.

Additionally, I found more than one clashed die error mint state specimen coin in that roll.  Moreover, a few 1983 struck through debris displayed in the nine of the date on two of them, as shown in the image below.

1983 Penny Die Varieties

Observe the “Bird’s Nest” die variety displaying a die chip in the upper right corner base of the memorial building. 1983 Lincoln cents with die cracks and breaks are worth around five dollars and up according to the Ebay sold listings.

Gas Bubbles or Plating Blister Pennies

Furthermore, plating blisters, or gas bubbles, are common occurrences on 1983 pennies.  In other words, they’re “particles caught in between the copper plating and the zinc core of an improperly washed zinc planchets react.

Moreover, it causes both the copper plating to bubble up and the zinc core to corrode. While it is technically an error made during the coin production process, it’s not considered as valuable.” – coinworld.com

However, people still collect pennies with plating issues, including those with plating gas bubbles, but average asking price is a dollar or less.  Additionally, “a common cause of zinc rot is the presence of a small perforation or tear in the copper plating.  This allows oxygen and reactive compounds to reach the zinc core.  If the bubbles pop, the coin develops zinc rot.”   – error-ref.com

Weigh 1983 Pennies to Discover Wrong Planchet Errors

Wrong planchet error coins make 1983 pennies worth a lot of money.   Furthermore, a small scale is all you need to know as a 1983 copper penny weighs 3.1 grams.  Anything more or less could be a wrong planchet error coin.    For example, check out an examination of a 2019 planchet coin plating error penny.  Happy Hunting!

1909 Lincoln Cent Errors, Varieties, and Values

1909 Lincoln Cent Errors, Varieties, and Values

The 1909 Lincoln cent is a sought after wheat penny known for errors and varieties.  Moreover, the values of the 1909 penny vary, but they can be as high as the price of a small house.  Furthermore, both mints struck coins with the initials and without the initials.” – Heritage Auctions

1909 Penny Famous for Controversy

Additionally, “the 1909 S version was the first year of the Lincoln coin. Almost immediately upon release the public made complaints about Brenner’s initials (V.D.B.) on the back of the Lincoln cent, because the initials are located under the wheat stalks.”

After the location of the V.D.B. initials attracted public scrutiny, the U.S. Mint responded to the criticism by removing the initials entirely.  “Thus the result some 1909 Lincoln cents bear the V.D.B. initials, and others do not.” – the-sun.com

Collectible 1909 Penny Varieties

Additionally, “instead of placing the initials elsewhere with new dies, mint employees simply removed them entirely from die.  This produced a new variety of 1909 cents without the V.D.B.

Furthermore, as new dies were being prepared, the designer’s initials on the old dies were removed by crude tooling. 1909 pennies struck by these altered dies are highly sought-after.” – error-ref.com

1909 V.D.B. Struck Through Reverse Error

What caused this coin to catch my eye first, is that the V.D.B. initials appear as a struck through grease error.  Moreover, I wouldn’t have noticed the V.D.B. without a microscope, because the initials aren’t as visible to the naked eye.

Was this 1909 V.D.B. penny deliberately struck through from crude tools used to remove the initials?  Was it an unintentional error?  Additionally, feel free to contact me with your thoughts about it.

1909 Lincoln Cent Mintages

The 1909 cent is extremely valuable not only because of the fame garnered from the controversy surrounding them, but also the low mintage brought on by the controversy.  Furthermore, only 484,000 1909-S pennies were produced.  However, though that’s a rare variety, it’s not all that makes these Lincoln pennies so valuable.

1909 V.D.B cents can be found for sale on Ebay in circulated raw condition at around five dollars and up.  The values do vary and depend on the condition of the coin, mintage, and variety.  The more unique the coin, then the lesser the population, and the higher the grade, the more valuable the coin!

For instance, a 1909 VDB cent graded MS62 BN, (brown,) sold at auction for $4,830.00.   A 1909 VDB penny graded MS68RD, sold at auction for $56,400.00!

Furthermore, there are only four 1909 VDB Lincoln cents without errors, but with a high mint state grade of MS68.  The PCGS price guide value is an estimated $57,000 per coin!   A 1909 1C Lincoln, graded PR68RD (Proof), sold at auction for $59,800.00.

1909 Lincoln Cent Doubled Die Varieties

The Right of Women to Vote

Susan B. Anthony was an American social reformer and women’s rights activist.  In other words, she played a pivotal role in the women’s suffrage movement.  Moreover, she willfully marched to the voting polls and cast her vote.  This was at a time when women weren’t permitted to vote.

After casting her vote, Susan was arrested and charged for breaking the law.  In August of 2020 Susan B. Anthony received a posthumous pardon by President Donald J. Trump.  The pardoning placed the spotlight on the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which secured the right for women to vote in America.

However, this wonder woman “wore her conviction as a badge of honor.”  Susan died in 1906 before the 19th Amendment became law.  Furthermore, the Susan B. Anthony Museum decided to reject the pardon in spirit of her defiance.
